52st CROSSING OF THE MOLOKA'I HOE Sunday, October 12, 2003 |
Jericho sent 3 crews to this year's Molokai Hoe - an amazing feat for our club! Congratulations to all the Jericho men on their racing and making the club look great. Conditions weren't great - All the crews were challenged by a "sloppy" Kaiwi Channel that offered only a few surfable waves. As Karel Tresnak Jr. (steersman of winning Hawaii/NZ crew) put it: "The conditions were junk, the tide was junk and it was sloppy. You had to work for everything." The Senior Men's crew faced their own challenge. There was confusion at the start line - problems with the oil supply on the escort boat. The oil supply was easily replenished but that wasn't communicated to the race organizers, who pulled the crew off the start line. The 6 guys in the boat weren't told what the problem was and the guys on the escort boat weren't told that the crew was pulled off the start line. By the time it was all cleared up - they started paddling - 10 to 15 minutes after the escort boats! They managed to pass over 30 boats during the race - leaving us only to wonder what they could have done with a clean start. It could have been worse - A crew from Waikiki Yacht Club did not get to compete at all because a speeding motorboat crashed into its canoe just before the start of the race. The canoe was split in half and a couple paddlers were sent to the hospital. |
